crysalice_bell 's fandom meme. She gave me 5 fandoms and I would tell my favorite character of each. Well, let's get on with it (I actually have to delay doing my assignment a bit to post this :P).
Yu-Gi-Oh GX: Yuuki Juudai
He's fun, he's interesting, he's adorable, that was what I thought about him at first. I love his confidence and his happy-go-lucky personality as well. Also, Red is my favorite color <3. Whenever I like a main character of an anime, I would start to find all the subbed episodes and watch it from start to end, even if so many people say that the show sucks, and I enjoyed GX a lot more than I had expected.Or maybe I saw it that way just because of Juudai. After the first two seasons with some bits of plots, a lot of crack and fillers, season 3 showed me the best development of Juudai and made me awed about how much emotional twists he had to go through. I liked that he was the one who decided his problems himself, got the consequences he hadn't meant it to be and still directly dealed with it after all. I was a bit disappointed when they didn't show what happened to Juudai between season 3 and season 4, which made me feel Juudai's change in personality in season 4 was a bit forced. Well, I'm happy that he regained his carefree personality, his love for duel (somewhat) and still kept his newly formed seriousness at the end.
Fate/Stay Night: Matou Sakura (mostly in the visual novel, route Heaven's Feel)
This may be quite a surprise to you guys. I know many people don't like her in the anime because of her being all meek and passive. I was kind of indifferent about her when I first saw the anime (all because I tend to pay more attention to shy and meek female characters like her) and I felt that there was more to this girl than what we had seen. Then I got to read the Heaven's Feel route of the visual novel and she started to eat my brain (her dark side, her backstory, her development, her hidden immense power etc.). I started to see her as more of a better character and feel that she deserves more love.
Gakuen Alice: Sakura Mikan
I actually had quite a debate within myself about who I like more between Mikan and Natsume. At the end, Mikan's innocence and strong determination won me over. She's one of the few main characters that inspired me as much as she inspired other characters, and she never failed to make me smile. Hyuuga Natsume is an honorable mention. I love his silent, snarky and catlike attitude. His protection of his sister and Ruka also touched me a lot.
Ranma 1/2: Hibiki Ryoga
Thinking about my most favorite character from Ranma 1/2 made my brain hurt because I love all the characters almost equally (which is rare for me). Finally, I settled with Ryoga. He's usually shy, humble and polite, and he's loyal to whoever he considers his friends, even Ranma, his long-time rival. His horrible sense of direction is hilarious, and P-chan is so cute <3.
Code Geass: Lelouch Lamperouge
He's a handsomegirly young man, he's a charismatic and intelligent leader, he's a wonderful older brother who has quite a sister complex. My own thinking usually tends to be more like Lelouch, maybe that's why I liked him at first. His sacrifice at the end was quite heartbreaking, which made me emo for quite some time T_T (until I saw the theory about Lelouch has become an immortal and is living with C.C. as a cart rider...)

IMO, it's a very amazing character development, partly because it's painfully realistic, and partly because the way they showed it in the show is awesome. While the lack of solid transition between s3 and s4 does make s4 Judai odd, he's still a character who underwent solid growth from all his experiences. 180 episodes is all it took ^^

Speaking of eating your brain, she can do that in HF, you know :P
Kidding aside, there are a lot of fans who don't like her backstory because it seems a little forced in overdrama so as to make the viewer pity her. Probably because the real story behind her is so radical as to be so hard to connect to her meek personality. I think she's a strong person in that regard, and I guess you really can't blame her for turning out the way she was in HF.

GA has nice characters (though it's hard to believe they're still elementary kids when they're shown going through lots of scary things -_-). Also Natsume is awesome for the reasons you mentioned :P

I've read that theory somewhere and even I'm still not sure of it, since I've watched CG in the supposedly edited DVD version. What makes CG the highly-regarded anime it is, I think, is because of the emotionally realistic characters and spider-web-complex plot, and, really any anime could be like that as long as they have those. Lelouch's gambits really make readers drop their jaws for the sheer brilliance of it ^^

Date: 2011-01-21 02:41 am (UTC)Kinoko Nasu, the author of Type-Moon visual novels, usually includes one female character who, despite their cheerful and meek personality, actually underwent extreme angst and drama despite in each of his work (Asagami Fujino from Kara no Kyoukai, Kohaku from Tsukihime, Matou Sakura from F/SN) and, according to a hardcore Type-Moon fan I know, they are his favorite type of character. Well, Sakura's backstory may seem to be a bit too overdramatic, but it connects to other events, characters and the previous Holy Grail War. Sakura was like a passerby in the other two routes despite some of her mysterious behaviors, so when she's got the development she needed in HF, I really appreciated it. In the near future, Fate/Zero light novel will get a TV-series anime adaptation, so we can finally get to see some of Sakura and Rin's childhood incidents clearer.
The thing that bugs me a lot in Gakuen Alice is how awfully young the main characters are. If they were in middle school, it may make us feel less scary -_-...
